A portrait painting or drawing conveys a mood and personality of the subject and is executed in a style that is unique to the artist. Additionally the portrait is a likeness of a person whose personality is filtered through the artist's mind and spirit to create a unique work of art to be treasured and passed down as an heirloom from generation to generation.
When possible, I prefer meeting with the client to discuss where the portrait will hang, pose, and wardrobe. This is sometimes possible the evening before the photo shoot, over the phone or through email as circumstances allow.
Another important part of the portrait process is to get to know the subject as these impressions play a large part in the creative process of the painting. A photo session will take place following this meeting.
Back in the studio the photos are reviewed to find the pose that most expressively portrays the subject. For portraits with 2 or more subjects two small compositional drawings are executed from which the client may choose the composition they prefer. Once the portrait is completed it is presented to the client for review at which time they may request small adjustments if they deem them necessary.
NOTE: under certain situations I may use a client's photo. Many times poses and lighting in a client's photo are not conducive to a successful portrait drawing or painting. For this reason it is imperative that I choose the reference photo that I work from, and not the client.

Portraits are executed approximately 95% of life size, but smaller paintings are available upon request. There is a 15% discount per subject for each additional figure in a painting or drawing and additional charge for backgrounds. Portrait prices do not include framing, travel expenses, shipping, or applicable taxes.
I have spent many years learning and executing the art of expressive photo work in order to utilize excellent reference photos to work from. To achieve this I bring my own professional photographic equipment (including lighting) with me to use. Under certain conditions I will work from a client's photo, i.e. posthumous portrait, pet portrait, or portrait of a subject when they were a child (but are now grown), or distance too far to travel.
A signed contract with deposit of 50% of portrait cost is due immediately following the photo session to commence the portrait process; the remainder is due when the painting is completed to the client's satisfaction.

Completion Time: Execution time for portraits can vary. For children or adults please allow two months, for drawings and/or pet portraits please allow 3 weeks.
